Northern Wildfire Crisis

As wildfires force families from their homes, Mikinakoos Children's Fund calls on Ontarians to support children in need

As wildfire evacuations continue across Ontario, families with young children are finding themselves away from their homes and communities with limited access to basic essentials. Mikinakoos Children's Fund has announced that they will be providing emergency food, water, children's clothing and other urgent essentials to affected First Nations families.

While Mikinakoos typically serves 33 First Nations communities across Northern Ontario, they have temporarily expanded their services to support as many First Nations children as possible during this crisis. They are coordinating with regional partners to ensure families most in need receive support as quickly as possible.

“Our priority is ensuring children have access to essential supplies during this crisis but resources are already stretched thin,” says Stephanie Paxton, Executive Director of Mikinakoos Children's Fund. “Many families have been forced to abandon their homes and some have lost everything. We want them to know they are not alone and we are calling on Ontarians to help however they can.”

With wildfires continuing to spread across Northern Ontario, multiple First Nations communities have been evacuated or remain at risk, leaving families uncertain about when they will be able to return home.
