Jumpstart Aids in Two Basketball Camps

At the beginning of Summer 2023, we received a $20,000 grant from Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities. This grant supported not one but two incredible basketball camps in First Nation Communities. Harnessing the power of sports, this funding aims to advance the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action 7, 18, and 38, supporting improved health, education, and a reduction of at-risk behaviour for Indigenous youth.

Our first camp saw 30 youth aged 4-18 from Slate Falls First Nation. For an entire week, we dove deep into the basketball basics – dribbling, shooting, passing – while emphasizing the value of teamwork.

Following the tremendous success of the first camp, the Mikinakoos team then traveled to Wabigoon Lake First Nation from August 14th to 18th. From scrimmages to games and drills with 30 children aged 6-16 showing up, we were able to challenge everyone with their appropriate skill level.

As part of this initiative, over $10,000 worth of brand new basketballs and nets were donated to both Slate Falls and Wabigoon Lake communities, fostering a lasting legacy of sport and unity.

Kielly, a proud member of the Mikinakoos team, exclaims, "This camp is more than just basketball; it's a platform for these kids to dream and achieve greatness. Through sport, we can instill confidence, resilience, and teamwork, empowering these young athletes to become future leaders in their communities."
