Food Insecurity in the North
The North Is Facing a Food Cost Crisis
Imagine a child whose growth is stunted because they don't get enough to eat. Picture families forced to choose between paying rent and buying groceries. These are not just statistics; these are real children and families you can help support. Communities including Kingfisher Lake First Nation, Pikangikum First Nation, Muskrat Dam First Nation, Bearskin Lake First Nation and many others that Mikinakoos serves are reaching out for help as rising costs and limited access to affordable groceries continue to create severe food shortages. The cost of food and school snacks in Northern Ontario First Nations can be 2 - 4x higher than the provincial average. In some northern First Nations communities, a bag of apples can cost more than an hour's wage. This leads to families and children having to eat less food, less nutritious food, or sometimes no food at all. Mikinakoos wants to change this — and we need your help to make it a reality! Together, let's raise $10,000 to provide essential food supplies to children in desperate need. Help us provide the food that will nourish the youngest members of these communities, giving them a chance to lead healthier, more promising lives. Below is a breakdown of how your donations are used:
